Lastovo Island - Island of Lastovo - Otok Lastovo - Insel Lastovo

Lastovo island is located on the southern end of the Croatian (Dalmatian) islands and is probably the most Mediterranean of the Adriatic islands when it come to climate. It's main attributes are the mild winters and long warm summers, the island receives approximately 2,700 hours of sun per year making it one of the sunniest Islands in the Adriatic Sea.

The summer warm weather produces a water temperature of approximatly 27°C, which makes it ideal for tourists, perfect for swimming, boating, fishing and all other water activities. In deep waters surrounding Lastovo Island you will find small bluefish, lobster and a large variety highly prized fish like John Dory and grouper.

Island of Lastovo is a lavish forested island, the terrain is mountainous with long valleys full of olive trees and vineyards. One of the Islands joys is that the profusion of agricultural delights which always makes it to the table in the fine restaurants you can find on the island.

Whilst the island is not overly inhabited, there are a number of towns, all of which have all of the modern amenities to make your stay on the Island pleasurable, there are ferries and high speed boats and catamarans that go back and forth servicing the mainland, Lastovo Island and the other surrounding Islands.

Lastovo has many sightseeing treasures including many churches dated back to 13th and 14th century, the lighthouse was built in the early 19th century (1839) which makes it one of the oldest in Croatia. The houses are also of interest as some of them date s far back as the 15th an16th century.

Arguably the best attractions found of the island is the Lastovo Island festivals, there are many year round, for example Lastovo Night and Lastovo Island of music, the biggest festival is the Carnival of Lastovo.

The Carnival of Lastovo celebrates the history of when the island was planned to be attacked by a pirate ship, the men were armed for battle and the women prayed to St. George causing the pirate ship to sink. The Carnival of Lastovo is a three day event, the attack by the pirates is reenacted every year in February making it the biggest draw card of the island for the tourists.
